Doors were map units and had strange open/ close methods, better described like "dirty hack". Fixing it, would make me to fix lot of issues, but also would give some possibilities.
So, I put myself together and removed one of the map unit control method (old one), removed doors from map units, they are now different type of stand alone units, iterations with them wouldn't touch the map.
As I mentioned before, It gave me different possibilities, so now, door can be locked, picklocked, bashed and have traps.
So, when you meet locked door you can lockpick it, if you know how or knock it down, but break open would 100% trigger trap, alarm nearby creatures and drain you food timer.
Yes, of course, traps are coming, it means new skill for trap detection etc.
I should admit, that hidden door are also possible, but right now they would be too easy to find, because of 3/4 tileset, we should find the solution.

Also, I found issue of ladder bug for some unknown reason, they got wall pattern, so they were blocking creatures to walk on there tiles.

There is small issue, that new doors are transparent, but I found way how to fix it, without adding additional if check to FOV calculations.

As a gameplay addition, Amuretis and Calabim factions would leave playable faction list, again ^_^, until done.
0.0.8 would have newcomers lizarman faction of Mazatl and, if I could fix them, The Fay faction, I am not sure for trolls, but faerie would be possible.

* As addition to all this things I created new unit, it would rule global events. Right now, it has only one method - map revalidation for temperature changes, but for the future development it would be important part of gameplay. Game would be stacking different global events and realizing them into game, for example every 10th day, but always when player stays on global map. Sounds really promising for sandbox gameplay.

PS
And yes, I forget about seasons, they are done, it moves temperature zones when cold/ hot months come, would give some interesting features, when temperature would affect gameplay.

First step of weather system has been done.

As you can see on screenshot, map generator made freezing, cold, temperate, warm and hot regions by itself.
Of course, We don't have hot and warm tileset, so I used hell tileset and freezing and cold tileset using same collection of tiles. Also, test map is too small, so we can see both hot and cold poles on one screenshot. So, I would make simple system, upper part of the map (North) would be cold one, lower part of the map (South) would be hot one, so center of the map would be temperate.
Generator would adjust map accordingly to the temperature.

Technically, we would have some basic temperature (yes, we would have seasons, and I'll write about them later), for example it would be 1000 units of heat (Later on I'll adapt it to C) Game would set this temperature to the middle side of the map, then it would be lowering temperature to the North, an heating world up to the South.
On this step, we would have: temperature, map generator update and temperature on the game screen.
You see, it wouldn't affect player yet.

Second step - seasons. Months would have settings for temperature, increasing it or decreasing. It can be set a bit funny and every year temperature would be constantly increasing or decreasing a bit.
Map generator should be changing tiles every month for winter and summer.

This is starting plan for future weather.

0.0.8 buglist

(no more updates in this post, moved to dev and future section)
I found, that FFHtR has lot of "bugs in waiting". I would make tools, but together we would make game for ourselves.
I'll drop some more explanation, if you would be interested, with 0.0.8 realize, of course!

Funny bug has occurred!
Sometimes game counts one random site as two and add it twice.
Two hermits in one cave looks suspicious! ^_^

I don't feel any aspiration to work on new grab, open and other interface menus, right now.
But, I started making config files, maps and random canvases. Be sure, it doesn't creates only dwarfs in hamlets! Later, I'll drop some more screens.

1. Locked chest with trade goods.
2. Random merchant, he is selling items from the chest. (I used "leather merchant" profile, but it can be set to nearly everything).
3. Just some random guy of Khazad faction.
4. This items were in this house before generation, it means you can place some roleplay furniture, like fireplace.
5. Well, that my avatar. ^_^
and, I din't mark a piece of bone, just some trash.

and, it was created this way:
at local map, this zone was marked semi-random, game flood fill it and set borders, then selected semi-random profile variant. It was easy, I made only one, yet, for testing.
It was:

ADD_CIVIL:999;
ADD_CIVIL:999;
ADD_CIVIL:200;
ADD_CIVIL:50;

TREASURE:Treasure\Goblin_Trash_1/1000;
TREASURE:Treasure\Goblin_Trash_1/500;
TREASURE:Treasure\Goblin_Trash_1/250;

MERCHANT:Merchant\Leather,MERCHANT_CHEST;

It doesn't have MIN_SIZE and MAX_SIZE settings, I just want to be placed everywhere, we are testing, you don't forget.

First four lines would add four creatures. Well, two of them has chance 999 of 1000 to be created and we see them, last two had smaller chances and failed to appear. ^_^

Then, 3 treasure profiles. Unpleasantly for residents, I used trash profile, with one, 100% predefined item:

NAME:GOBLIN_TRASH_1;
CONTAINER:NONE;
LOCK:0,0;
ROTTEN;
ONLY_ONE_ITEM_FROM_LIST;
MIN_QUALITY:CRUDE;
MAX_QUALITY:CRUDE;
MATERIAL:DEFAULT;
CANVAS:BONES_GARB,MOSTLY,1;

Sorry guys, just pile of bone, but of course, it can be totally random items, even pile of them.
and the last one of them created merchant chest with trade profile Merchant\Leather (same like treasure profile, you can check them in Res\Custom) and linked it with last created creature.
Enough for now, of course, it would be expanded, but even this tools can create vast possibilities for adventure. Generator respected size and shape of the houses, they are not square ones, but none were outside. Neat!
So, next step is to add semi-random canvases into files.

As I wrote before, faction semi-randomness wasn't something hard to create.
I got wolfs at first level of Broken Sepulcher. Also, funny bug occurred, wolfs armed themselves with urns, chests and barrels. It isn't new created bug, just item equipment method bug with animal gear. There wasn't any animal dungeon with standing items beforehand. I'll fix it, of course.
But it isn't that cool, as I thought, I have an idea how to improve this, but later.

Right now, I working on semi-random content of houses and dungeon rooms, when finished, it would change FFHtR gameplay tremendously, especially if a good list of random canvases would be created.
How it would work?
Lets see, on semi random maps or completely random dungeons some floor tiles would be marked as "random room tiles". If generator would meet such tile, it would use flood fill algorithm to get coordinated of such tiles unit, rooms and would create table of such rooms. Then, game would check every such room and put there something from one of the preset random variants.
For example, our old good hamlet of Hallowel has 10 empty houses, this houses would be filled with "random room tiles". Generator would form 10 rooms to fill.
Also, Hallowel config file would have something like that:

RANDOM_ROOM:CIVIL_HOUSE_POOR,1,4,200;
RANDOM_ROOM:SHOP_FOOD_RICH,0,2,500;
it means, that Hallowel has two configs for random rooms CIVIL_HOUSE_POOR and SHOP_FOOD_RICH.
Of course, we need really big list, if we want it to interesting, but its just an example.
First number, 1 for CIVIL_HOUSE_POOR means, that Hallowel should have at least one of this, and second number 4, means maximal number of such houses in this hamlet (it is poor hamlet, but it isn't so bad).
And the last one, 200 means, that when guarantied quantity of such sites would be placed, there is 200 of 1000 chance, that random generator would try to select another type of canvas if randomly select that.
The same is for SHOP_FOOD_RICH.

Good, then we open file named CIVIL_HOUSE_POOR.
it looks like this:
NAME:house;
MIN_SIZE:2;
MAX_SIZE:5;

CONTENT;
CIVIL:RANDOM,500;
CIVIL:RANDOM,500;
CIVIL:BEGGAR,1000;

ITEM:TRASH,100;
FURNITURE:PLAIN_BED,800;

well, it is enough for poor house, I think ^_^.
MAX_SIZE and MIN_SIZE would control size of used room, and would tell generator to try another one, if requirements doesn't meet. It would prohibit beggars shacks in palace big rooms and palaces in carton boxes -_-.

So, you understand next, it would add 3 creatures. Persons with random civil profession with chance 500 of 1000 and one guarantied creature with beggar "profession", chance 1000 of 1000 ^_^.
And two items, trash and bed.
FURNITURE and ITEM constants would tell generator, how this items should be placed.

Of course, such system doesn't respect compatibility of room, so we can have shack near palace or thiefs den next to guard station, but it isn't concern of my current work. I need to make it runing smoothly. Compatibility would be future goal. Yeah, it would be nice to have bad, rich, merchant or docks districts, but ok, lets do what we plan first!

Randomization looking good!
It was easy to make randomized faction selection for sites, I looks further for more random content, like small houses, hermits, lone wolfs etc

Also, GoodSir brought amusing idea about randomization of pregenerated sites, I'll put his great idea to use and then would write here about it!

One World, One Save Folder, One Player

Well, I have cut multiple save slots and ability to reload game, after heroes death. FFHtR is hardcore once again. Its odd, because I spent lot of time to create that.
Damn, roguelikes should be hardcore! At end of of all, now you can avenge you previous Avatar with help of new one. I think, that I'll add hero status to Avatars killer, as nemesis of %Avatar_Name%, so, it would be easy to find "that bad guy". ^_^
Also, this way of gameplay tends to be more sandbox, that previous one.

Surprisingly, this change was really bugs free. Of course, there are some issues, such as: lands, explored by fallen hero remains explored, but it was predictable and would be fixed, when I would start "word validation, after avatars death" code.

So, next step, as I told before, would be semi-random sites,
then "word validation, after avatars death" and the last ones would be different small issues from 0.0.7 version.

After that, I'll cut down global map up to small, really small map, I'll write about it later on and would realize 0.0.8 "One World, One Save Folder, One Player" version.

Work progress

If you wander, what is my current concern in game development, so here it is:

As I wrote before, I spent enough time analyzing gameplay of FFHtR and found some critical flaws in it.
I would make some serious changes in gameplay, game world at the next patch.

First of all, I'll cut down existing save system, one game world per copy of the game.
It isn't that horrible, then it looks.
First, it would temporary "resolve" save game files size problem.
And yes, it would be possible to enter game world after the death of one character by other adventure and even recover body and equipment of fallen one.
Of course, game would change game world a bit after every restart, repopulate cleared dungeons, clear trash a bit, pass some game time.

Game would ask you every time you restart the game, create a new world or continue at existing one (yes, of course, it would also speed up game start).

Next step would be randomization of global map. I am not sure, that totally random game world is really cool idea, it is really hard to create and result isn't that great.
So, first change in global map generator would be semi-random sites, with danger level and exist chance setting in config file (maybe I would later add some danger multiplier from distance from starting location and game date, not sure for now), so every time you create new world in older versions, you can be sure - there is level 2 goblin dungeon. In 0.0.8 it can be any type of "cave" site, for example wolfs, of wolfs and bears, or simple goblins, or tough goblins with orc leader etc

Another problem is pregenerated sites, like hamlet of Hallowel, they took lot of time to create and interesting only for the first time, but I don't have any ideas how to improve this, right now. Maybe experience would bring the insight.

And of course, different unfinished business from previous versions, lot of them.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, boys and girls!
Happy New Year, my dear friends!

I wish you everything, everything you want for yourself!
Of course, new interesting roguelikes.

My New Year resolution is to beat 1-20 of Roguelike of the 2012!

Work started!

Goooood!!!
I finished all counting, writing and recovered well enought!
I have two good news.
First, GoodSir finished first game word concept document, so, we can develop game world more precisely.
Second, I'll use this papers and my calculations for new game world,
and, well, the third, as bonus, after such break (pressing N for new game did work). This was a problem every time I tabbed in and out. The screen only refreshed if I pressed a button that did something. And the backgrounds stayed ugly. (Also, my startbar always remained visible. So some GUI was not available). I tried moving the game towards my second (smaller) screen. But that didn't help. And you cannot resize the game window.
Can't fix it. Gone angry, but can't find issue! Game, technically stopped losing video card after alt-tabbing, but, of course, main surface doesn't redraw itself. Yes, of course, because game doesn't know about it. It there any way to check, that game wasn't active for a time, even if device wasn't lost?

During select background you cannot determine what the perks are. (So essentially, all the information is useless for new players).
Unpleasant issue, but it needs total conversion of PC creation, I'll see, maybe it would wait for new interface or I'll add some additional key for close perk review.

u was listed as use, but when pressed some gui element changed. It is more conformable now, also, added few additional features.

I also found a lot of BLANC items.
Fixed! It was map-converter error. This BLANCS should be trees.

And there where a lot of spelling errors. Esp in the present and past tense. Of course, we would have story and drama, but it wouldn't be center of gameplay.
So, survival is cornerstone of such type of gameplay.
What it would be:
Food, temperature?
Any ideas?

Update:
From one hand, it easy to create survival, make player to collect branches for fire, finding clean water, keep in mind temperatures etc
well, Such basic survival sounds good for the the start of the game, but later, you know, such micromanagement doesn't fit well future epic adventures and would become simply boring.
We should find some nice mechanics to fight it, and to my mind it simply impossible or
we can allow player to "overgrowth" such simple needs, when character progress at levels.

I vote for the second one.

28.10.11 Camps

Camps bugs were defeated and goblins stays near campfires now.
They need some containers and items near them, of course.

28.10.11

I think that It would be nice idea to post here development "diary".
It can keep us motivated and would give you some fun.

well...

"Inventory patch" programming finished. Right now GoodSir finalizing and polishing hi-res inventory canvas and Psiweapon drawing inventory icons.
There are lot of this icons, but you will like them, I assure you.

Because of this, I got some "free" coding time for future work.
So, I re-factored pathfinding code, as I wrote before, and started "Quest patch" schedule.
Of course, none of the random quests can match old good hand made quest, but good selection of random quests makes game interesting in field of replayability, so we should keep it balanced.

Random quests would be our first goal.
Game would be analyzing global map interrelations, its used right now for random encounters, and would form quests.

If we speak about current work, I have tried to rework cave generator, so intellectual creatures wouldn't be scattered around cave, but would group around different items, like campfires. February? March? It's been the first game I've collaborated with, and I've always tried to give it a creative approach (sometimes I've had more success, sometimes less)

JollyRoger has given me a lot of room for creativity, save for very few particular cases, and I owe him big time thanks for the chance to train my pixel skills. Usually, gave me broad concepts of what he needed - these and those professions for dwarves and humans; these kinds of undead monsters - and then I started making little doodles while at the university, and turn them into pixels when I got back home.

I'm now doing some freelance pixel jobs, so I don't have as much time as I had some months ago, but I still look forward to keep working on this and other free projects Smiley.

Im in ur rougeliekz, pizelin ur tielz! Grin

GoodSir
I have done some graphics for FFHtR (for example most of GUI). I don't have much to say since my involvement in this version development was less than desired, but I hope that i'll be able to do much more for the next version 8)
Have fun playing!

Jolly Roger
You may find FFHtR too incomplete right now, full of features, but somewhat boring, because of incompleteness. It is OK!
You know, it is impossible to build Empire State Building from LEGO part, if you don't have one. The same is for roguelikes, of course, except, maybe for coffee breaks, so, all previous development was concentrated of adding features, we need really big box of LEGO ^_^!
Meanwhile, 0.0.6 can be turning point of development, we now have tons of features, and future realizes would be named ones, with more gameplay changes!

Day Zero. Towns, hamlets, caves and dungeons, treasures, monsters and damsels in distress. To my mind, the most important part of every roguelike is interesting sandbox gameplay. YES, of course, good and tragic storyline is really important, but, you know, if game is simply uninteresting in field of "bashing monsters, gaining exp and loot", there is no need for the story.
So, don't expect much of a story from FFHtR, we must create strong and health sandbox roguelike first.

10 days left.

So, what aspect of FFH captures the attention? It is the way FFH team solved problem with powergaming, boredom of super powerful endgame. Yes, I am also talking about Armageddon, interesting part of the game, breaking done "ash breeze" of gameplay.

Usually, we traveling in the worlds, which already survived Apocalypse/ Armageddon or it can change, but in really limited manner.
Frankly speaking, I always want to play or create and then play ^_^ game with changing world, seriously changing, forming new landscape, land sites etc.
And, second important note, it shouldn't be player triggered changes (like in ElderScrolls, until player starts storyline demons would be waiting). Of course, player must have ability to influences such epic changes of game world, otherwise it would be unfair and not interesting and some of them may be triggered by player, but it doesn't and most of the time shouldn't be activated by player.

One of "big goal" plans, "hatched" all this years, was "Armageddon today" gameplay, Game would not take place in the world after Armageddon or Armageddon wouldn't be in "game over" score lines, it would be now.
Player would start in calm (as Erebus can be named "calm") world, but later different global events would occur, changing game and forcing powerful and bored player to act.

Armageddon would come in 0.0.6 version. It wouldn't to come final stage, of course and would stop at moment of infernal invasion to Erebus. It would be fair, because player wouldn't have real instruments to prevent (or speed it up!) Armageddon , so advent of Harbingers and other Armageddon events would be game breaking. Also, there would not be (in 0.0.6 of course!) different events increasing or slowing/ preventing Armageddon, just constant increasing Armageddon counter.

Later on, there would be more global events, affecting world, as Armageddon (like Mercurians arrival) and players intervention into this process. Every ideas welcome.

11 days left.

Four days left for feature development itself. I am not sure, but Alchemy would miss the realize, again -_-.
Puppeteers finalization gone fine, but, there are some issues to finish. I'll found a bit of time for this later on the week.
Todays plan is to rebalance leveling system, experience points and perk (if possible). Currently, player gain level up to 4-5 without problems and then troubles begins. Also, there is no perks to select and stat gains.
You know, there is no feeling that your hero becomes powerful, stronger etc. Thats should be fixed!

During the development of FFHtR, we found that FFH mana system completely inappropriate for roguelike. It is cool to have two dozens of mana as global resource in strategic game, but it is a bit tricky to manipulate that selection of mana types as single spellcaster. Even more, this micro-mana-managent was really annoying.
So, FFH manas were united to groups and single manas become effects. It is really comfortable then before.
For example fireball spell using Elemental mana and has fire effect, Death vortex uses Excruciation mana, dealing death damage and leaving poison base trail with confusing effect (Undead magician choice! Udead heals by death effects and immune to poison ).
Now, we have Elemental, Excruciation, Divine and Metamagic manas for use.
Divine and Metamagic would not be in use at 0.0.6. Divine mana needs "divine chapter" and metamagic is blanc space right now, with no spells available.

12 days left.

Five days left and tons of unfinished business are ahead.
New addition to sweet company of heroes would be Balseraph Puppeteer, combination of magician and "pet-lord" adventure. Except, he wouldn't be summoning or taming his pet, but making them from different materials, from pathetic wood to legendary mithril.
Also, Bapseraph puppets aren't like Luchuirp golems, formidable creature of great size, puppets are small jumping and giggling noisy pets. Surprisingly useful in combat and easily expendable.
They are almost done, but some interface part are still missing, and that the plan for the day.

Speaking about development of FFHtR, you can ask, why this game has bodyparts? Is it some sort of modern roguelike fashion? Nope, never. As I wrote below, first name of game was "Robots" and it should be (surprise!) about robots. And what is the main feature of every robot? Changeable bodyparts, of course!
Well, frankly speaking, it doesn't worth the efforts. All this can be imitated by some other way and coding bodyparts interaction is realy pain, I wouldn't do again, well, until paid in good cash per line ^_^.
So, FFHtR has it and it wouldn't be wise to dispose lots of work.
Who knows, maybe creatures in fantasy universe should be able to change there part for something else? I am not sure, would Alchemy catch this realize or not, it is a bit too complicated.

Well, today I want to post a bit of FFHtR history, when it has been started and so on.
Development of this roguelike, it wasn't FFHtR at all(!), began at September-October of 2008.
It was hundred percents "death march project", lack of coding skills with combination of sky-high plans failed lot of roguelike. Robots (older name of FFHtR) wasn't an exception from this rule.
So, I have surrender at February of 2009 and didn't remember about this until end of 2009.
One day, after gooood session of my favorite FFH game, I remembered about pile of code on my hard drive.
And asked myself, why not? FFH universe is great! Fantasy roguelike style are well known and successfully used in many roguelikes!
Results of next attempt you can see here. Sky-high plans were returned to the mother Earth (still, there enough for many ears of development), bought and learned books about coding and, the most important, really cool guys joined the development!
Could we do this roguelike? You will judge.

14 days left.

What is Fall From Heaven itself?
To say in short - it is CIV4 game mod, but not "just" game modification.
It is one of the most elaborate and mature mod as for CIV4 as for all game moding world.
FFH universe are really thought-out with wast lore and legend.
If you never tried it, but really like Civilization series, then give a chance: Fall From Heaven official.
And, if you already know what FFH is, you are more interested what part of FFH we have in FFHtR.

Well, as you can understand, looking at upcoming version number (0.0.6), there isn't FFH epic amplitude... Yet. Of course, we are not planning to make a copy of FFH at roguelike. It is impossible and stupid, roguelikes have different scale.

Do you wonder, whats really happens to single adventure, who enters Broken Sepulcher? or whats happens in Balpseraph circus tents or Khazad mining towns? Travel to pestilential fields, touched by Armageddon, fight Buboes or ally with him?
But not as godlike ruler, but simple mortal adventurer?

Thats our big goal, of course.
Right now, FFHtR is merely immature puny rogulike. No more features after this date in 0.0.6!
If some nice feature wouldn't work well until this date, it would be turned off and would wait for patches or next version. Cheers!
And second one would be "test and polishing" week.
Bugs and sharp edges, you name it.

I'll try to update devblog nearly every day of this last week stand and will try to tell you about world of Fall From Heaven, game creation and our team.
Let do this!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ffhtr.blogspot.com/2011/09/two-weeks-procrastination-is-thief-of.html' title='Two weeks!
